Living in Migrant Shelters: An Ethnography of Humanitarian Bonds. Doctoral dissertation for the degree of PhD. in Anthropological Sciences, UAM Author: Eric Oliver Luna González Migrant shelters have been operating and providing humanitarian services in Mexico for nearly 40 years. Located throughout the country, they have received little attention as an object and field of anthropological study, and it is only in recent years that some studies of varying scope have emerged. As such, this dissertation considers the migrant shelter as a nonhuman actant that mediates and interacts in various ways with issues such as the migration of people in irregular transit, undocumented status, or in refugee situations, as well as with humanitarian practices and other actors present within the shelter. The ethnographic approach to studying migrant shelters presents the challenge of being an ethnography of interstices and tensions, where the figure of the ethnographer-volunteer facilitated a connection between the shelter and its inhabitants (volunteers, migrants, refugees, etc.). This allowed for the proposal of the ethnographic notion of "living in the migrant shelter" as a situated and multi-situated method of research. The thesis is divided into five chapters that draw on extensive ethnography conducted primarily in southeastern Mexico, along the border at El Ceibo (Tenosique, Mexico, and La Libertad, Guatemala), as well as experiences in the central and northeastern parts of the country. To address what is described as its humanitarian practice of providing shelter, food, and rest, the initial question is: How does the migrant shelter function and connect? In this context, three questions guide the fieldwork: What are the humanitarian practices of the migrant shelter? What is the experience of living in the migrant shelter like? How do these connections persist after leaving the shelter? The study concludes with two proposals that address current issues: the micro-spaces of containment and the bodies of migrants in waiting, demonstrating that humanitarian actors, in their political actions, are not immune to change and emergencies; however, their humanitarian practices persist and continue to forge connections. Key words: Ethnography, Migration, Humanitarianism, Actant, Migrant Shelter.
