Recent studies relate it to low sperm count and reduced sperm motility. When sperm leave the seminiferous tubules they need to go through epididymal maturation in the epididymis, where in 1 or 2 weeks they acquire the ability to move, to recognize and to fertilize the oocyte. The epididymis is an androgen-dependent organ that can be affected by overweight and obesity and alter the sperm parameters and morphometry of the epididymis. The objective of this study is to show the effect of overweight and obesity on epididymal morphometric analysis and sperm parameters. In this study, 18 three-month-old Wistar strain rats male were used. They were divided into three groups with an n=6 per group: overweight, obesity and control. Water and food were available ad libitum, each group received a specific diet (10% to generate overweight and 60% obesity) TestDiet for one month; naso-anal measure and the weight of the rats were recorded. The gonadal fat, the epididymis for the sperm analysis and the morphometry were obtained with histological technique to be analyzed. The hyperlipidemic diet induces both overweight and obesity in Wistar rats, decreasing the somatic epididymal index. In both overweight and obesity groups a reduction in seminiferous epithelium height and tubular diameter were observed, number and length of the cilia were affected, as well as the presence of abundant vacuoles. These changes led to alterations in sperm quality, sperm viability was drastically reduced (32%) in obese animals and significantly in overweight (70%). An increase on morphological abnormalities in the midpiece and tail were present in these groups. %G spa %[ 2023-12-20 %9 info:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesis %~ UAM %W UAM
