Console is a branched columnar cactus whose flowers and fruits show a preferential southern orientation. In this project, the effects of flower orientation in pollination success are addressed. The objectives of this study were: 1) to determine if there are differences in flower features at contrasting orientations, 2) to explore the relationship between the orientation of buds and flowers and the success in fruit-set and seed production, and 3), to explore if pollen limitation contributes to differences in success between orientations. Methods consisted in collecting and measurement of buds and flowers, monitoring buds for evaluating the success in fruit production, and carry out an experiment that included hand pollination for evaluating pollen limitation. All of these procedures considered contrasting orientations. This study showed that orientation has a significant effect in some floral features in Myrtillocactus geometrizans. Flowers with South orientation were significantly large, produce more ovules, and show more anthers, in comparison with flowers in the North facets of the branches. The output from the monitoring of buds for evaluating differences in success in fruit-set and seed production did not revealed significant differences. The experiment for evaluating if pollen limitation is also responsible of reproductive differential success between flowers with contrasting orientation did not throw significant results. The hypothesis on differential reproductive success between contrasting orientations and pollen limitation should be tested in future researches. %G spa %[ 2023-12-14 %9 info:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesis %~ UAM %W UAM
